Software innovation

We are constantly innovating — using the latest technologies to improve our gate, yard and vessel operations — making every process more efficient than before.

As the first stevedoring company in North America to invest in computer-based stowage, we have worked closely with programmers to develop customized stowage planning tools that greatly improved productivity. Since then, sophisticated proprietary systems have been installed to ensure your cargo is readily available for the next transportation step or pick-up anywhere in North America.

Today, EMS continues to streamline and refine operations throughout our terminals. With our mainframe updated continuously with real-time data, we’re currently researching to make our gate operations even more efficient.

Hardware improvization

More than a decade ago, Eagle Marine Services pioneered the use of self-locking twist-locks (inter-box-connectors), setting the standard for what the industry uses today. Leading a cross-functional team with representation from local unions and O.S.H.A., we identified the best twist-locks for the job, then outfitted our terminals with them.

The result: Higher vessel productivity, greater cargo-carrying capacity, and a safer working environment for longshoremen and others.

More recently, we realized our on-dock rail operations would be more efficient if swingmen didn’t have to climb ladders to reach the tops of double-stack railcars. With this in mind, we designed a vehicle that keeps the men and women who work the rails at the right height — and our innovation is now being used on terminals throughout North America.
