EMS History

A quarter century of experience, and counting

History

At Eagle Marine Services, ours is a history of continuous improvement — of working hard and collaborating with key partners to find newer, better ways to tackle today’s transportation challenges.

Whether implementing practices that result in a safer work environment or investing in technology that streamlines operations and keeps your truckers moving, EMS has a history of innovation that spans more than 25 years.

Software.

We are always innovating — testing the latest technologies to make our gate, yard and vessel operations more efficient. For example, Eagle Marine Services was the first stevedore in North America to invest in computer-based stowage. We worked closely with programmers to develop customized stowage planning tools that greatly improved productivity.

Years later, sophisticated, proprietary systems ensure that our customers’ cargo is made available for pick-up more quickly, or is flowed onto awaiting stacktrains destined for points throughout North America.

EMS continues to streamline and refine operations throughout our terminals. Our mainframe is updated continuously with real-time data, and we’re researching cutting-edge technology to make our gates even more efficient.

Hardware.

More than a decade ago, Eagle Marine Services pioneered the use of self-locking twist-locks (inter-box-connectors), setting the standard for what the industry uses today. Leading a cross-functional team with representation from local unions and O.S.H.A., we identified the best twist-locks for the job, then outfitted our terminals with them.

The result: Higher vessel productivity, greater cargo-carrying capacity, and a safer working environment for longshoremen and others.

More recently, we realized our on-dock rail operations would be more efficient if swingmen didn’t have to climb ladders to reach the tops of double-stack railcars. With this in mind, we designed a vehicle that keeps the men and women who work the rails at the right height — and our innovation is now being used on terminals throughout North America.

Looking Ahead.

Every move we make is based on our history of innovation and our commitment to "raising the bar." So, when it comes to the next advance in the business of stevedoring, look no further. At EMS, we’re already on the job.
